To answer the most obvious question ("Why on earth would you offer to help people with this?") pre-emptively:

1/ I've met a number of people (single moms, lesbian couples, opposite-sex couples) who have an unenviable choice between donors they cannot meet and don't know (aside from written dossiers and maybe photos) and not having kids of their own. Many would be excellent parents. They deserve another option: donors they _can_ meet. Excellent parents raising thoughtful kids are one of the major forces for improving the world, so if I can help them, I'd be honored to.

2/ It may sound presumptuous to say so, but I think I can make a positive genetic contribution.

3/ Donation is a very highly leveraged volunteer activity. It makes a very big difference for the recipient but requires minimal effort on my part.
